With Suburban Voodoo, Paul Carrack re-launched his solo career following a successful stint with Squeeze that produced a hit with his lead vocal on "Tempted." By this point, Carrack was playing with Nick Lowe, who produced Suburban Voodoo, and the album sounds very much like a Lowe album with Carrack singing. That's all to the good, though, since Carrack's supple voice is well-suited to Lowe's updated '60s rock & roll style. Carrack scored his first solo Top 40 hit with "I Need You," but that was one of the slighter tracks on an unusually tuneful album. ~ William Ruhlmann

The Prince of the 80s

In the family of funk Prince Rogers Nelson was a genre all by himself. In 40 years of career, he managed to mix the legacy of the founding fathers (James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton) with influences like rock 'n' roll, electro and even jazz. An exuberant and stunning groove that shone mainly between 1978 and 1988...

“Thriller”: The Anatomy of a Masterpiece

With "Thriller” in 1982, the best-selling album of all time, Michael Jackson broke down the boundaries between styles, races and audiences. However, most of all, it was an album that completely shook up the pop music industry of the 20th century.
