Serving as the Habsburg representative in Naples from 1728, Count von Harrach was, like any cultured man of his time, also keen on music. Back in his stronghold of Rohrau (Lower Austria) after his long stay of six years in Italy, he brought back all kinds of objects, paintings and scores that inspired this album, which has been designed by Maurice Steger, virtuoso of the "flautino", an instrument which was very fashionable in those days.

Small, easy to tune, handy and easily transportable, the recorder has given rise to a number of works written specifically for it. A dozen Italian composers rub elbows on the programme of this refreshingly voluble album. If Naples was one of the main centres of opera in the Italian peninsula, instrumental music also developed there with an equal brilliance.

The Swiss flautist Maurice Steger uses eight different instruments to interpret the works of Sammartini (in whose works he specialises), Hasse, Caldara, Vinci and Leo. And that's not to mention other small jewels cut by composers who are now totally forgotten but who formed an integral part of this huge gallery of musicians of eighteenth century Naples. We pass happily from the soprano flute to the Renaissance tenor flute, the viola or flutes which imitate the human voice. It is a rich panoply and produces as many distinct emotions as it does distinct sounds. © François Hudry/Qobuz
