Three years after his last collection of original material, Paul Carrack slides back into a comfortable groove with Soul Shadows. Perhaps the groove is a shade too cozy, sometimes drifting so close to the middle of the road it seems to veer toward old-fashioned easy listening, something where it's all surface and gentle vibes. The high-class homespun production doesn't help in this matter: apart from the drums, which are played by his son, Carrack plays every instrument here, so the proceedings are tidy and immaculate, the cleanliness tending to soften the soul. The real human touch comes from Carrack's voice, which is as warm and easy as ever while also benefiting from the gentle assurance of an old master. He never pushes too hard, never gets lazy; he's happy to be easy and if the songs don't necessarily hook, this certainly is a mellow good time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus

What a difference 50 years can make! By early 1969 rock music had become a leading cultural force: The Who had just recorded Tommy; Cream packed Royal Albert Hall for their farewell concert; Janis Joplin became a solo act; Led Zeppelin performed for the first time. And after four months of recording, The Beatles (aka The White Album) was out and climbing the charts. To understate the obvious, rock music was awash in talent and standards were high.

New Order: From Darkness to Dance-floor

How does one Mancunian group move from perhaps the gloomiest band of the punk era to a master of the dance-floor? In the early eighties, straight out of Joy Division’s ashes, New Order marked one of the first successful unions of rock’n’roll and dance music. A perfect soundtrack for a morose, Thatcherite England.

Philadelphia Soul, Funk with a Bow Tie

Neither Motown nor Stax Records! Philadelphia Soul offered a third voice of its own. Created by the Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff duo, this genre - the precursor of disco - made America dance in the early 70s by soaking it in silk and champagne.
