The California Honeydrops

A modern blues band that tempers its retro inclinations with a contemporary flair, the California Honeydrops carved out a following on the international blues circuit in the 2010s. When the Honeydrops released their debut, Soul Tub!, in 2008, they specialized in straightforward re-creations of classic blues sounds, spending as much time playing boisterous New Orleans R&B as they did laying back in a West Coast style, but as the 2010s progressed, they synthesized their disparate influences, culminating in the ambitious 2018 double album Call It Home, Vols. 1-2. Singer/trumpeter Lech Wierzynski, a native of Warsaw, Poland, formed the California Honeydrops with drummer Ben Malament in Oakland in the late 2000s. Prior to the Honeydrops, Wierzynski worked as a session man for such musicians as Dan Hicks and Maria Muldaur, developing chops that later paid off in the band. Adding pianist Chris Burns and multi-instrumentalist Nansamba Ssensalo, the group released its debut, Soul Tub!, in 2008. Burns and Ssensalo would later leave the band, and the lineup would rotate relatively frequently as the California Honeydrops continued to tour and record for their Tubtone Records label in the 2010s. Spreadin' Honey arrived in 2010, followed by Honeydrops Live in 2012. A third studio set, Like You Mean It, arrived in 2013, with A River's Invitation appearing in 2015. In 2018, the band released the double album Call It Home, Vols. 1-2.
