Following the 2006 release of the first volume of Alexander Scriabin's piano sonatas, Matthew Bengtson completes the cycle with this second volume on Roméo Records. The remaining works here are the Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 6, the Sonata No. 2 in G sharp minor, "Sonata-Fantasy," Op. 19, the Sonata No. 6, Op. 62, and the Sonata No. 7, Op. 64, "White Mass" (these nearly atonal sonatas have no key designations), along with the Four Preludes, Op. 37, the Deux Morceaux, Op. 59, and the Two Poèmes, Op. 63, which are provided as filler. By listening to all of the sonatas in order, listeners can easily follow Scriabin's development through three distinct phases: the early pieces influenced by Chopin, the middle period works that bear striking similarities to Debussy, and the final compositions that reveal Scriabin's distinctive, visionary style. For the second volume, Bengtson has arranged his program so these phases are clearly laid out, though the brief middle transitional period is only represented by the Four Preludes. These performances show that Bengtson grasps Scriabin's emotional world with acute understanding, and his feeling for the later pieces (roughly 1910-1912) is especially revelatory. Despite the great complexity of lines, cross-rhythms, and dissonances that make Scriabin's music daunting, Bengtson shapes it with poetic sensitivity and precision, putting these recordings among the finest contemporary interpretations. Highly recommended.
