Originators of a dreamy, even spooky art rock that can be danceable or boldly proggy, Los Angeles's all-female Warpaint still have an undeniable energy and creative synergy, one undented by the six years since their last album. These serious musical talents look the part of rock grrls—jeans, cool guitars, attitude—but are really atmospherists, equal parts groovy dance beatmakers, prog rock drifters, and girl group flag wavers. Shoegaze and psychedelia are also major influences in the band's moody, sometimes synthy soundscapes. With the double barrel blast of guitarist-vocalists Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman out front and a lithe, muscular rhythm section—who also sing—of bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg and drummer Stella Mozgawa behind, Warpaint brim with confidence and invention. Produced by Sam Petts-Davies who worked with the band on their 2014 debut, Radiate Like This was finished in California in early 2020 but like so many albums from the pandemic, it was massaged remotely in home studios for another year. Mixed by Davies, Ewan Pearson, and Tucker Martine, the results are more detailed than the band's past four albums, a quality especially apparent in the vocals which are more carefully layered in the choirs of "Stevie," the background choruses of the Christine McVie-influenced piano and strings exploration, "Trouble," and all the voices heard in the catchy, dancey bass-led lead track "Champion." The love song "Stevie," also showcases both the massed vocals of Kokal as well as her hilariously honest lyrical skills: "Dream lover lover/ Like no other other/ You're down and dirty/ You are one freaky mother." Warpaint's other frontperson Wayman shows off her keyboard and programming skills on "Altar." Having no obvious lead singer is a strength rather than a weakness as they prove on another love song, "Melting," as the four join together for a dynamic, three-part vocal chorus of, "I'm the gold/ You're the alchemy" and "The only way out from this cold unknowing/ is to radiate like this." Filled with songs that as Kokal says, "are about becoming honest, and owning what you're really feeling, and being vulnerable," Radiate Like This is much more interested in creating an uneasy feeling or a thought-provoking mood rather than easily identifiable melodies or hooks. This slyly potent quartet strikes again. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
