Drawing from the mother lode of traditional songs in the public domain, songwriter Dave Alvin brings an authentic voice and extraordinary understanding to his chosen tracks. Familiar songs from the folk canon like "Shenandoah" and "Walk Right In" are reworked by him and a full band with arrangements incorporating the roadhouse style they've honed from years of working together. He also unearthed lesser-known songs like "Mama, Ain't Long for Day" (perhaps credited to Blind Willie McTell), "Sign of Judgment," and "Railroad Bill," having learned versions from records he unearthed as a kid by obscure artists: from Will Bennett to Kid Prince Moore. This is the work of a scholar as well as a master craftsman.

Americana, America Through its Roots

The title may sound like a nebulous marketing ploy, and yet for about twenty years, Americana had been summarizing this blend of rock, country, blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues. And like in every big family, you’ll find almost every type of person: the rebellious daughter, the cultivated uncle, the agitated father, the driven cousin, etc.

10 Queens of Folk

An acoustic guitar. Sometimes not much else. But always a unique voice… In recent years, the folk revival has produced some new major and exceptional female singers, just like their elders in the sixties, and particularly the seventies. Some of these Queens of folk have earnt their place in the Hall of Fame, while others remain equally essential hidden gems. This (subjective) selection features ten of the best.

Guy Clark, poet and troubadour

He was worshipped by Johnny Cash and many others, but remained largely unknown until his death two years ago, in May 2016. Who was Guy Clark, the immense Texan songwriter, the unmatched narrator, the troubadour with the husky voice whose compositions were interpreted by all the big names of country and folk?
