It was more than the novelty of a Samoan tenor that propelled Pene Pati onto the best-seller charts in 2022. U.S. reviewers have raved about the young singer, generating a good deal of advance buzz, and his voice has been developing consistently. His is not a glass-shattering voice, but his virtues lie elsewhere; in tunes, especially quiet ones, he leaves the listener entranced. He seems to have a special flair for the French repertory, which depends heavily on these. In the big high notes as well, the French language somehow seems to give his voice freer rein. In the Rigoletto excerpts, the biggest hits here, he is adequate but unspectacular, but this brings to mind the other virtue here; Pati does not do the usual debut album filled with operatic favorites. On both the Italian side (Verdi's La battaglia di Legnano, Rossini's Moïse et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell, the latter two of which are French operas) and the French (Gounod's Polyeucte, Benjamin Godard's Jocelyn of 1888) he picks items that range from novel to rare. Some will want this album to fill holes on a shelf or hard drive, but what is more important is that it shows a singer already in control of his career who can pick music that exhibits his strengths. The accompaniment from the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine under Emmanuel Villaume is solid, and this is every bit the attention-getting debut it has been cracked up to be.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

10 Versions of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique

As a proper manifesto of French romanticism, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique marked the 19th century as much as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring impacted the 20th. Composed in Paris − which at the time was a global crucible for artistic creation − these two masterpieces catapulted musical language into another dimension. On December 5th, 1830 the revolutionary work of 27-year-old Hector Berlioz deeply moved the musicians present in the small room of the old academy of music, among whom were Meyerbeer and Liszt, who were impressed by the extraordinary audacity of this piece presented just three years after Beethoven’s death.

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.
