When John Parish, PJ Harvey's producer, takes the time to sit down behind the console to work on a record, people tend to take notice. To see why, take a look at Party, Aldous Harding's second album, which we might swiftly (or hastily?) categorise as cerebral folk: it is neurasthenic, and spellbinding. Only, behind these reductive labels, the young New Zealander commands a much broader musical spectrum. On the model of the Living The Classics/Party series: on the former track, Harding is gentle and almost evanescent, before mutating on the latter into a baleful imp.  No effects, no instrumental chicanery is needed to win the crowd's ear. Because even if we can see that she knows the classics (Kate Bush, Joan Baez, Linda Perhacs, Joni Mitchell, Vashti Bunyan...), it is the very personal tone of her voice and her songs that makes this second album an impressive moment of intimacy and revelation... © MZ/Qobuz

Iggy and the Stooges: The Dawn of Punk

In 1969, a group of self-confessed cretins dynamited rock'n'roll with a charge of distortion and nihilistic lyrics. At the head of these Stooges was Iggy Pop, a sort of obsessive, rebellious Nijinsky, who was destined to become the Godfather of punk rock.

New Order: From Darkness to Dance-floor

How does one Mancunian group move from perhaps the gloomiest band of the punk era to a master of the dance-floor? In the early eighties, straight out of Joy Division’s ashes, New Order marked one of the first successful unions of rock’n’roll and dance music. A perfect soundtrack for a morose, Thatcherite England.

Jack White, The Saviour of Rock

From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. But a decade on from "Seven Nation Army", the genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. And while we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.
