Graeme James

New Zealand native and one-man-band Graeme James is a versatile singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his compelling live performances and loop pedal-driven indie folk. Born in Nelson, James spent his formative years training to be a classical violinist. Folk and Celtic music soon entered the fray, as did indie rock and pop, and by the time James had left university, he had added guitar, bass, baritone ukulele, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, and beatboxing to his arsenal. The procurement of a loop pedal in 2010 proved to be the missing piece, allowing James to showcase all of his talents at once. In 2012 he began busking and eventually developed a loyal regional fan base via his distinctive takes on popular songs like "Bittersweet Symphony" (the Verve), "Seven Nation Army" (White Stripes), and "Wonderwall" (Oasis). Using crowdfunding, James self-released his debut, Play One We All Know, in 2013, with a second volume arriving the following year. In 2015 he released a pair of his own compositions, "Alive" and "One + One", both of which appeared on his first collection of originals, News from Nowhere. The album topped the New Zealand charts and cracked the Billboard Top 40, which caught the attention of Nettwerk Records. James made his debut for the label in 2018 with the singles "The Times Are Changing" and "Reverie.
