« La musique de Gershwin permet la liberté de l’imagination interprétative ; le chemin de sa réussite est la connaissance de ce qui a nourri cette musique : les « musicals » dans lesquels les Américains sont inimitables, les longues phrases sentimentales des chansons, certains éléments du jazz et, surtout, l’ambiance de Broadway. Même s’il fut critiqué, Gershwin n’en est pas moins resté l’un des musiciens les plus proches du public et, pourrait-on dire, des publics. Le temps ayant passé, il prend maintenant sa place légitime dans l’histoire de la musique car, « il fut indiscutablement un novateur… » Michel Philippot
