The fourth album from Manchester quartet led by the “bad boy of pop-rock” (as described by Pitchfork) Matty Healy, 31. The most interesting thing about The 1975’s music is its ability, through diversity and multiplicity, to represent the times in which we live. This is their strength, but also one of their limitations. On this rather pretentiously titled album, “Notes On A Conditional Form”, we find an ensemble of many styles: an intro of several minutes consisting of worrisome spoken-word à la Laurie Anderson (in fact an alarming speech by Great Thunberg on “The 1975”), thrashing rock and punks’ cries on “People”, a quasi-classical section resembling the soundtrack of a new age film on “The End (Music For Cars)” before finishing it all off with the very R&B, “Frail State of Mind”… A sort of virtuous patchwork, the album resembles an eclectic radio show or playlist. With some twenty-two tracks, and a one hour twenty minute run time, this might appear lengthy. But the diversity of this post modern collage helps us to forget that we are listening to just one group. The only danger? A blurred identity diluted through multitude. A little like our lives today. © Yan Céh/Qobuz

Erased Tapes, a Not-so-classic Label

Since its birth in 2007, Erased Tapes has made a name for itself as one of the most innovative labels of the last 15 years and enjoyed great commercial success. Although some fail to see past its neoclassical shopfront (Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds), the London-based label explores the outer limits of ambient, electronica and experimental with a catalogue that's smoothly curated by the German Robert Raths. Qobuz takes a closer look.

Jack White, The Saviour of Rock

From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. But a decade on from "Seven Nation Army", the genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. And while we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.
