Announced as the twelfth addition to “NYAPS” (Neil Young Archives Performance Series), this stellar album has not just been fished out from the back of a drawer to make a quick buck. This archive is relatively new and compiles recordings from Neil Young’s short European tour in 2019. Two weeks before the start of this tour, Neil Young buried his old friend, Elliot Roberts, who’d been his manager for 50 years. Neil Young travelled with a picture of Elliot Roberts on his guitar case, and the entire tour was dedicated to him. There’s nothing sad or pitiful about the affair, in fact, Elliot Roberts would surely have been tapping his foot along from his spot on the side of the stage if he’d been there. Supported by Promise Of The Real—the eclectic band that has often accompanied him since 2015, notably on The Monsanto Years—Neil Young revisits parts of his discography with a vigour that’s a real treat for the ears. Fans will swoon over this version of On The Beach, a song Neil Young rarely plays on stage and even more rarely with a band. The singer and his musicians perform in perfect harmony, from subtle ballads to upbeat tracks fizzing with energy. Promise Of The Real certainly live up to Crazy Horse, Neil Young’s long-time band. Between his archive releases and new recordings, Neil Young has released an average of two albums per year for some time now.
