Not many people wait until they’re 66 years old to bring out their debut album. Even though Kim Gordon has a CV that’s 15 km long, Sonic Youth’s bassist and singer has never taken the time so express herself as a completely solo act - until now. The aptly named No Home Record (a nod towards Chental Akerman’s No Home Movie which explores the director’s relationship with her mother, an Auschwitz survivor) is the fruit of a life spent in music. The no wave/punk DNA of Sonic Youth’s music remains intact here, though it also adapts to the times with touches of electronic music. This beautifully genre-less album goes through many different styles: rock noise sequences, dark and industrial ambient tracks, avant-garde songs, mystical ballads, we could go on… Yet despite all this eclecticism, No Home Record (a record produced by Justin Raisen – behind Angel Olsen, Yves Tumor, John Cale, Charli XCX - and recorded at the Sphere Ranch in Los Angeles) can still be considered an entity. It’s a work chaperoned and carried by the lady of the house’ incomparable voice, one that sings (or speaks?) with uncompromising desolation. ©Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit, even forty-five years after its release.

Shoegaze, the calm & the storm

The two faces of shoegaze, the rock current that lit up England in the early 90s, couldn’t be more fundamentally opposed: a fierce battle between violent guitars and silky vocals. From its precursors like the Cocteau Twins and Jesus & Mary Chain, to its godfathers My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Slowdive, shoegaze is always on the move and many of their heirs still strum their guitars and create electric sounds.
