Just like New Year's Eve fireworks, the Vienna Philharmonic's annual concert is an integral part of the New Year's tradition. While 2021 has seen too many concerts without an audience, in 2022 the Vienna Musikverein will be able to look forward to the reopening of its doors - even if wearing a mask is still required. This event has taken place every year since 1946, and each year, an illustrious conductor leads the Philharmonic in a joyous programme centred on the repertoire of the Strauss dynasty.
Daniel Barenboim, who has enjoyed an extremely close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic for decades, conducted this prestigious concert event for the third time, after 2009 and 2014. Barenboim opens with Josef Strauss’ Phönix-Marsch, a work that was a resounding success at its premiere in 1861.
The following pieces are also magical: The Mermaid, The Overture to The Bat, Tausend und eine Nacht ("A Thousand and One Nights"), Nymphen-Polka ("Nymph Polka"): the programme takes us into a world of fabulous creatures and daydreams, for a more than welcome escape from our daily lives!
Barenboim and the Vienna Philharmonic form a magnificent symbiosis. Their long-standing collaboration since 1989 is today marked by a deep bond, an authentic sound and, above all, an immense joy. Without any great actions or words, the two parties match each other perfectly. An encore of The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March - the highlights of any New Year's concert, where the audience, guided by the conductor, can keep time - should not be missed.
