Seen from a distance, but also seen from up close, this is a project that's sure to raise some eyebrows. A solo trombone album isn't the kind of record that normally unleashes passions. But as this is Nils Landgren, one of the instrument's most brilliant ambassadors, we will listen well. And that's all for the better. Surprisingly, in forty years of a seriously eclectic career that has ranged from pure jazz to the most furious groove with his Funk Unit, the Swede had never recorded an album all on his own. Nature Boy is therefore a gamble of an album that owes a lot to the place where it was recorded: the church of Ingelstorps, on the Swedish coast, where the musician and his wife Bea spent months in lockdown. "Such a beautiful sound, making the tone of my trombone just fly through time and space. Bea and I looked at each other in silence, knowing that this can become something special." And it did! The site's powerful acoustics transport the trombone into a dreamlike world. There are some jazz standards here, like In a Sentimental Mood or Nature Boy but also Swedish folk numbers (with Allt under himmelens fäste and Värmlandsvisan which he sang in church as a child). This repertoire has special meaning for him, and Nils Landgren plays it with subtlety and delicacy, two sensations usually rarely associated with his instrument.
