At 37 years old, Dan Tepfer is one of his generation’s most adventurous jazz pianists. Record after record, whether he’s dealing with Bach or Natural Machines, he confirms his unique approach. “With this project”, explains the Franco-American, “It’s a project where I explore the intersection, in music, between natural and mechanical processes. I do free improvisation at the piano, and programs I’ve written on my computer interact with me in real time as I’m playing, both musically and visually. I love it because it feels like very new territory, and it’s exciting to be exploring it.” The interest is not all in this complex and original writing process but also in what Tepfer creates. He delivers a free and stateless music, as well anchored in jazz as it is in contemporary music to the point that we quickly forget the algorithms with which the album was created. A fascinating record. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
