Mozart's first true operatic masterpiece, Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), K. 384, cavorts around a Turkish harem with sexy slow numbers and brilliant arias for the principals. (Thomas Quasthoff fans note: he appears here in the purely speaking role -- the opera is a Singspiel, with spoken dialogue -- of the Pasha Selim.) This live recording from the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, made in 2014, captures most of the opera's virtues. Soprano Diana Damrau in the role of the imprisoned Konstanze, is lively and equal to the challenges of the dangerous "Martern aller Arten" (Tortures of all kinds), and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin keeps things moving and doesn't overload the Chamber Orchestra of Europe to the point where its energy is drained. The cast in general is well integrated into the overall conception, and if there's a weak point it's with the most celebrated member of the cast, tenor Rolando Villazón in the hero role of Belmonte, whose big tone is out of proportion with the music in general. The performance feints in the direction of historical performance with its fortepiano continuo, but can't compete in that regard with William Christie's historically informed version. It is on balance, however, a highly listenable Mozart in a live recording that puts the singers front and center, and brings them across well.

Album Description

The Earth’s Song: The World of Gustav Mahler

What could have prompted Gustav Mahler to compose a work as unclassifiable as this one? Written between 1907 and 1908, a pivotal period in Mahler's life, The Song of the Earth occupies a special place within his oeuvre. It combines the “fin de siècle” spirit with the fascination for the exotic that was spreading amongst his peers at the time. Vienna was in turmoil when this music was composed, and the piece oscillates between the notions of farewell and new beginnings. With a lot of layers to peel back, The Song of the Earth definitely merits a closer look.

Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.

Erased Tapes, a Not-so-classic Label

Since its birth in 2007, Erased Tapes has made a name for itself as one of the most innovative labels of the last 15 years and enjoyed great commercial success. Although some fail to see past its neoclassical shopfront (Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds), the London-based label explores the outer limits of ambient, electronica and experimental with a catalogue that's smoothly curated by the German Robert Raths. Qobuz takes a closer look.
