Before his retirement in 2014, conductor Michael Gielen was one of the leading specialists in modernist music, though like several of his colleagues, he also demonstrated a strong aptitude for the standard symphonic repertoire, including the symphonies of Anton Bruckner. Gielen's recordings of the nine numbered symphonies with the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken are presented on 10 CDs in this trimline box set from SWR Music, the second of two volumes. (The first volume consisted of Gielen's recordings of works by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.) Here, Gielen conducts a mix of original versions and revised editions, which may confuse some listeners. For the most part, the symphonies are not dramatically different in their musical content, except for the original version of the Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, "Romantic," which differs substantially from the later, more familiar revisions, and the Symphony No. 8 in C minor, which Gielen presents in its original version with the garish C major conclusion of the first movement. Aside from these matters, Gielen leads the orchestras in efficient and straightforward readings that are faithful to the scores and free of tempo fluctuations and exaggerated effects. This set may not appeal to traditionalists who like their Bruckner reverent, weighty, and ponderous, but it will interest listeners who have an open mind about this composer and his complicated methods.

In your panoramas...
Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Nelson Freire, a Humble Virtuoso

A child prodigy in his native country, the Brazilian pianist who passed away in November 2021 kept his distance from the noisy fanfare of fame. His enormous hands and his natural and virtuoso technique always assisted his full, powerful and mellow sound. Here Qobuz looks back at the career of a musician that for a long time was the “best-kept secret in the world of the piano”.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.
