After a period-instrument reading of the Symphony No. 1 that received unanimous acclaim from the critics, François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles return to Mahler. Joined by the luminous voice of Sabine Devieilhe for the famous finale, they offer us their vision of the Fourth Symphony, which in its own way marks the composer’s transition to modernity, and reveal unsuspected colours and instrumental balances. We still have much to learn about the polyphonic transparency possible within Mahler’s big orchestra! © harmonia mundi

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.

Karajan conducts Sibelius' Sixth Symphony

In 1967 Herbert von Karajan, one of the most outstanding performers of Sibelius' music, recorded a memorable version of the Sixth Symphony. His most beautiful version of this work and perhaps also his most fascinating Sibelius recording.

Herbert Von Karajan and The Grand Masters of Classical Music

30 years after his death, the Austrian Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 – Anif 1989) still embodies the musical conductor like no other. In charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years (1955-1989), Karajan helped to elevate the orchestra to a level of global prestige. Throughout his career, he methodically diversified his repertoire: from Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner to Verdi, Wagner and Strauss…
