A true wet dream for the fans of 2010s Anglo-Saxon indie rock: Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile joined together on a disc! Recorded at the Newmarket Studio in Melbourne, Australia, and produced by Callum John Barter, their album Lotta Sea Lice exudes both sincere complicity and mutual respect. The Australian and the American have in common their fascination for the Golden Age of a certain rock ’n’ roll classical style - think Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain… It’s these values that they put through the mill of their time and tackle in a lo-fi and simple (but not simplistic) way. That doesn’t prevent the two long-haired singers to be first and foremost true songwriters. Two solid wordsmiths full of originality, self-deprecation and even caustic humor. Courtney has fun covering Kurt (Peeping Tomboy). And Kurt has fun covering Courtney (Out Of The Woodwork). Belly’s Untogether and Jen Cloher’s—Courtney Barnett’s life companion—Fear Is Like A Forest, are two other covers present on this unassuming disc which reveals itself to be one of the most convincing rock attempts of its time. Seriously. © MZ/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Jack White, The Saviour of Rock

From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. The genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. While we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

The Black Keys in 10 Songs

From 2001, The Black Keys have been reminding the world about the real roots of the Blues, cutting away all the frills and unnecessary solos. Their music has always been untamed, abrupt and minimalist. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney developed this unique style over the course of two decades, without once selling their souls to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads. Here are ten songs to prove it.
