Loose Future is the title of Courtney Marie Andrews’ new album. Whilst this is an accurate depiction of the album’s content and the global context, it needs clarifying in terms of the singer’s personal life. In 2020, Courtney Marie Andrews hit rock bottom following a breakup (a trauma that was exacerbated by the Covid lockdown). She was given a new lease of life by taking refuge at her friend’s home on the coast in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Every morning, she would go swimming and then write a song. Some months later she moved to New York and created this album, which she describes as a rebirth. On her previous albums, which established her as the queen of Americana, Courtney Marie Andrews explored all the nuances of her sadness in delicate country-folk settings. However, on Loose Future, she changes her tune. It’s not a radical change, but it all sounds a little lighter, warmer and brighter. Everything is still nuanced, with little percussion, graceful acoustic instruments, vocal ploys that raise the tempo of the songs, and lyrics which have the uncanny ability to say things perfectly. These are songs to play in the car with the window down. When Courtney Marie Andrews sings about summer, she puts the very essence of the season into her songs. She doesn’t announce the impending arrival of autumn, instead choosing to cherish the moment. With her angelic voice so perfectly suited to alternative country music, Courtney Marie Andrews has really found her wings here. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

The Chicks in 10 Songs

One of the most polarizing bands around, the Dixie Chicks—as of June 2020, simply The Chicks—have never toed the line so many women in country music were once expected to.

Johnny Cash Behind Bars

Two legendary live albums released at the end of the sixties gave Johnny Cash’s career a huge boost and turned him into an international star. They were two records were unlike any others: they were recorded in prison. But how did the Man in Black find himself in such an unusual concert hall?

Outlaw Country: Nashville Uprising

In the early 1970’s, a group of musicians from Nashville radically challenged the city’s musical tradition, its codes, its smooth productions and its clichés. With Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and a few other long-haired rebels who were deeply influenced by rock and roll, this new trend defied country music’s conservatism.
