The title, London Ko (London + Bamako), could suggest a simple trip, a departure and a destination. In truth, this third album by the Malian singer looks more like a map spread out on a table. Each song is a stopover, a musical space, and a friendly collaboration. For Bamako, it’s quite clear: Fatoumata Diawara is, primarily, of Malian nationality, singing in her native languages to West African rhythms and melodies. For London, navigation is left up to the guide Damon Albarn. Since his Africa Express and Gorillaz projects, which featured Fatoumata Diawara, he has become a great enthusiast of African music. The producer of six songs, Albarn brings a certain English touch to the album’s open and danceable rendition of Afro-pop. Fatou also makes a stop in Cuba for an Afro-jazz trance, partnering with the piano prodigy Roberto Fonseca, with whom she had already released a live album in 2015. Moreover, it is Daniel Florestano, a close friend of Fonseca and the Buena Vista Social Club, who produced a good part of London Ko, with his characteristic roundness and warmth. Fatoumata also teams up with Matthieu Chedid, fellow Lamomali adventure traveller known as "the French Damon Albarn". Surrounded by limpid choirs, Fatou sits high above the clouds. Mossayua is a fitting example. We also get to meet Angie Stone on the recording. Designed while on tour between three countries (Mali, France, and England), and even more cities, this peripatetic album is full of movement and of the energy of live performances and real encounters. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
