With this recording, Gaétan Jarry has created what can only be described as a self-portrait of the great Organ of the Royal Chapel of Versailles. The programme is devoted to the essential works of the French Baroque organ, including the dazzling Grand Dialogue en ut by Louis Marchand and the famous Récit de tierce en taille by Nicolas de Grigny.
However, Gaétan Jarry has more than one trick up his sleeve. For the first recording made on this grandiose instrument built in 1710, which has been expertly restored to its original glory, he puts forward a repertoire that’s characteristic of the period with transcriptions of vocal pieces such as Le Sommeil d’Atys by Jean-Baptiste Lully and the well-known Contredanses des Boréades by Rameau (pieces which wouldn’t have been known in the 1800s, since Rameau’s last masterpiece was only performed again in Aix-en-Provence in 1982 after spending more than two centuries lost in oblivion). This album features a very personal choice of works, passing through England with Purcell and even Handel, always guided by the culture and personality of the organist. It really does justice to the powerful sonorities and timbres that were so typical of the Golden Age of the French organ.
Inaugurated by François Couperin in 1711, this instrument (built by Clicquot) was placed above the altar to face the rostrum on which the royal family sat during mass. It only just survived the Revolution, and later underwent modifications that altered its original state. Cavaillé-Coll transformed it into an instrument typical of the romantic period in 1872, and then organ builder Victor Gonzales converted it into a neo-classical organ in the 1930s. In 1989, it was completely dismantled and scrupulously restored by Jean-Loup Boisseau and Bertrand Cattiaux who returned it to its original appearance and sound. © François Hudry/Qobuz
