Rico Nasty isn’t remotely interested in doing what everyone else is doing. After ten years in the business, the Maryland rapper has dabbled in drill and trap, as well as cleaner, brighter sounds on her previous album, Nightmare Vacation. Now she’s getting into distorted, violent, almost glitchy rap. Las Ruinas is a disorienting album; an all-or-nothing release that makes no compromises. Always provocative, Rico Nasty operates as if on an egotrip without aneasthesia. The track Black Punk is the perfect example of this, seeing her explain how she can’t tell the time on her watch because she’s dazzled by the diamonds and golden gears. The hyperpop influences are easy to hear (as is her openness to modern and synthetic rock, genres that her friend Lil Yachty often employs), though not so much on the track Gotsta Get Paid—the odd one out on this tracklist, featuring a sick breakbeat and dripping with 2000s nostalgia.
