In 1975, exalted George Clinton shook the funk world with his Mothership Connection, the fourth album of Parliament, his band composed of talents named Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Michael Hampton, Gary Shider and Fuzzy Haskins. On the eponymous single, Uncle George launched a sort of alter ego named Starchild. And some forty years later, the same Starchild seems to be back. But the king of the P-Funk galaxy isn’t involved anymore. Behind this resuscitated nickname hides a man by the name of Bryndon Cook, 24 years old, who the keenest funksters will know from his collaboration with Solange. As a guitarist for Beyonce’s sister, this native from Prince George’s county in Maryland, showed tremendous virtuosity, emphasising his love for 80s funk music.

Now the man in charge, he can convey on his own his passion for these synthetic grooves (that sometimes flirt with kitsch) that the likes of Prince, Teddy Riley and a few others excelled at creating in the last century. And because this third-millennium Starchild is incredibly talented, he can switch between lovers ballads to listen to by the pool, wearing a silk bathrobe, and sputtering pop eruptions, slapped bass and epileptic solos included. A close friend of Dev Hynes a.k.a. Blood Orange (with whom he forms the VeilHymn duo), Cook doesn’t constrain himself to 80s funk and Prince, his ultimate hero. His first album highlights, here and there, his love for go-go music, soul, gospel, hip-hop, R&B, new jack swing and jazz. But as soon as he brings out his falsetto, the Princely mimics inevitably come back.
