François Couperin, the modern harpsichord

A favourite of Louis XIV, François Couperin (1668-1733) was the harpsichord superstar of the 18th century. At the time, the harpsichord was a prestigious instrument which was at the height of its fame (although it would return to obscurity in the following century), and Couperin revolutionised the way it was played, breaking a path that would later be trod by other virtuosos of the period like Dandrieu or Rameau. The Quebecois harpsichordist Olivier Fortin tells Qobuz the story of "Couperin the Great".

Paul Van Nevel, the ancient music craftsman

The saviour of lost causes from the Renaissance? That’s him! The insatiable digger, tirelessly tracking down savant polyphonies from the Early Middle Ages in European libraries? Him again! The recording of the first opera ever written by a woman (Francesca Caccini)? That’s him still, Paul Van Nevel, musicologist, cigar enthusiast, art historian, and mainly, music director of the Huelgas Ensemble since 1970. Let’s take an eager look at the Van-Nevelian music universe.

The paradox of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s studio

In France this summer for the Rencontres musicales d'Évian, where he conducted the Symphonic Orchestra of La Grange au Lac, Finnish acclaimed conductor and prolific composer of over 60 albums, Esa-Pekka Salonen discusses his unique approach to working on classical music in studio.
