Vol. 6 of this complete recording presents what might be termed the opposite ends of the broad spectrum covered by Kuhnau’s music, both in formal matters and in chronological respects.

On the one hand, in Ihr Himmel jubiliert von oben and Lobet, ihr Himmel, den Herrn we have two magnificent Ascension cantatas for large ensembles from Kuhnau’s late period as St. Thomas music director. On the other hand, Bone Jesu, care Jesu and Laudate pueri Dominum, works of Italian stamp scored for chamber ensemble from Kuhnau’s time as a St. Thomas organist with a wide range of activities, offer exemplary illustrations of the sacred concerto of the late seventeenth century. Ich freue mich im Herrn for four concertists, choir, and strings occupies a middle position between these works and offers an interesting mixture consisting of the concerto-aria-cantata popular in the late seventeenth century and the rondo form and is borne musically by the affection of joy.

Once again the Opella Musica ensemble of soloists founded by Gregor Meyer in 2011 and the historically oriented Camerata Lipsiensis orchestra interpret the cantatas on the basis of the recently published critical musicological edition. © CPO

10 Versions of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique

As a proper manifesto of French romanticism, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique marked the 19th century as much as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring impacted the 20th. Composed in Paris − which at the time was a global crucible for artistic creation − these two masterpieces catapulted musical language into another dimension. On December 5th, 1830 the revolutionary work of 27-year-old Hector Berlioz deeply moved the musicians present in the small room of the old academy of music, among whom were Meyerbeer and Liszt, who were impressed by the extraordinary audacity of this piece presented just three years after Beethoven’s death.

Erased Tapes, a Not-so-classic Label

Since its birth in 2007, Erased Tapes has made a name for itself as one of the most innovative labels of the last 15 years and enjoyed great commercial success. Although some fail to see past its neoclassical shopfront (Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds), the London-based label explores the outer limits of ambient, electronica and experimental with a catalogue that's smoothly curated by the German Robert Raths. Qobuz takes a closer look.

Wilhelm Kempff: The Most Human of Pianists

An artist of another time, Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) believed in inspiration: he took on music as if it were a religion, with a respectful enthusiasm for the masters that came before him. With his velvet touch, sense of phrasing and storytelling quality, Wilhelm Kepff’s art was like that of a waking dream. Half poet, half divine, during a time when expression of emotion triumphed all. He recorded many times the works of his favourite composers, in particular his ‘god’ Beethoven, for whom Kempff is well known and left behind three complete sonatas in keeping with his own maturation and the evolution of his recording technique.
