Alors que Le Messie fut, du vivant de Händel, un véritable tube international, Israel in Egypt fit un flop dès sa création le 4 avril 1739. La raison semble en avoir été l’abondance de grands chœurs et la relative rareté des arias ; alors qu’au XIXe siècle, la recrudescence de chœurs amateurs à travers toute l’Angleterre en fit une œuvre particulièrement recherchée !
    En termes de recyclage, Händel reprend (et étoffe considérablement) plusieurs de ses œuvres pour clavier, ainsi qu’une cantate de Stradella, un Magnificat de Erba, et des pièces instrumentales de Kerll et Strungk (à vos souhaits !). Naturellement, ces objets trouvés subissent maintes modifications et händelisations, de sorte que le produit fini ressemble à s’y méprendre à du Händel… en réalité, c’est du Händel. On remarquera en particulier l’usage très présent de la figuration, cette « peinture musicale » destinée à souligner, à l’aide de formules purement musicales, des aspects plus saillants du texte : la sécheresse du désert, les mouches, la grêle, la mort de tous les premiers-nés, l’obscurité, bref, les Dix plaies d’Egypte.
