Born to a Pakistani father and a Norwegian mother, Nadine Shah is, in a way, the daughter of PJ Harvey’s revenge and Siouxsie. An interesting kinship, confirmed on Holiday Destination. In her third album, the Londoner tightens the bolt of her music that she delivers in a very tense, nearly post-punk manner with an angular bass line, nervous albeit minimalistic guitars, and an almost free-playing saxophone. An urgency undoubtedly dictated by the themes covered, such as migration issues (PJ Harvey had also touched on a similar issue in The Hope Six Demolition Project…), that makes Holiday Destination even stronger and more powerful. © MD/Qobuz

Warp, 30 Years of Groundbreaking Music

Warp, the record label which led to the blossoming of some of the most boundary-pushing artists of the electronic music scene, such as Aphex Twin, LFO, Boards of Canada, Autechre, and Squarepusher, now has their catalogue available on Qobuz. It’s the perfect opportunity to revisit the history of Britain’s best-respected independent label.

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

10 Queens of Folk

An acoustic guitar. Sometimes not much else. But always a unique voice… In recent years, the folk revival has produced some new major and exceptional female singers, just like their elders in the sixties, and particularly the seventies. Some of these Queens of folk have earnt their place in the Hall of Fame, while others remain equally essential hidden gems. This (subjective) selection features ten of the best.
