The recording of Hasse's Cleofide by William Christie for Capriccio with Capella Coloniensis in 1987, followed seven years later by a series of concerts in Paris, Vienna and Montreux with Les Arts Florissants, had marked an important milestone in the rediscovery of this German composer who had been strongly influenced by Italy.
A well-liked composer of Farinelli, Hasse composed many operas and also "serenades", long cantatas whose plot is simpler and more collected, such as this Enea in Caonia, probably first performed in Naples in 1727 and filled with beauty: virtuoso orchestra and arias set off remarkably by the solid team of singers conducted with beautiful effervescence by Stefano Montanari in this recording made in Rome in 2019.

The Saxon composer's youthful work, this deeply Neapolitan serenade also testifies to the rapid transformation of operatic language which led to the Gluckist reformation that would peak some forty years later. This modest serenata contains some tunes whose style would become typical of Hasse, with his mixture of melancholy and melodic grace. We highlight the sensitive and virtuosic performance by Paola Valentina Molinari in the difficult role of the oracle Eleno and Raffaella Lupinacci's intense rendering of Andromachus. Conductor Stefano Montanari favours vigour and contrast to instill a theatrical spirit into this studio version. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Orfeo Orchestra: 18th Century French Baroque, Resurrected

Orfeo Orchestra (conducted by György Vashegyi), a prolific performer of French baroque music since its birth, has been honoured in recent years by both Palazetto Bru Zane and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV) with invitations to record a series of explorations of French lyrical music – both baroque and classical.

Gounod: the Romantic, the Mystic

A major artisan of the renaissance in French music in the second half of the 19th century, alongside his elder colleague Berlioz, whom he admired, and his followers Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Massenet, who were inspired by his faith in Art, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), a mystic and a charmer, a romantic in search of a new classicism, owed his fame to a few masterpieces, which have overshadowed his daring. A flourishing discography allows us to discover the diversity of his music: instrumental, vocal, religious, and lyrical.

Maria Callas "dal vivo"

Breathtaking in its range, Maria Callas’s recorded legacy becomes all the more astonishing when we consider that her studio opera recordings were all made within the space of just over a decade: she recorded no fewer than 24 complete works between 1952 and 1960 (and most of them between 1953 and 1957). Soon after moving to Paris, she added Carmen and a second Tosca to the list, in 1964 and 1965 respectively. Her complete studio recordings, including a series of celebrated recital discs, all painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, were released in a luxury box set by Warner Classics in 2014. This is our reproduction, with the kind permission of Warner Music, of Michel Roubinet’s introductory text in the album booklet ‘Maria Callas Live’.
