Composing for the screen demands a taste and a skill for all styles: from disco for a nightclub scene, to a madrigal for a period drama, the cinema musician has to be ready for anything. And John Barry (1933 - 2011) was surely one of the greatest soundtrack composers, and one who was able to immerse himself fully into all genres of music and film.
More than 45 years before the success of the "Black Panther" movie, Hollywood targeted the Afro-American community by providing them with customized heroes. From "Shaft" to "Super Fly" and passing by "Blacula", the Blaxploitation offered at the time thrillers, comedies and even vampire movies, and worth noting, the music contained a few groovy 70s gems...
In Germany they have their own Michel Legrand: he’s called Peter Thomas! His film music is often eccentric and it has left its mark on a whole generation of viewers in the 60s and 70s, to the point where he’s often been cited and sampled by numerous young pop groups since the 90s. We met up with the German cult composer who is about to celebrate his 92nd birthday.
