Although the band hasn't actually changed its modus operandi, Morbid Angel has been able to strengthen and deepen their death metal over the years. One listen to Formulas Fatal to the Flesh makes that clear. At its core, it's death metal, but the group demonstrates more imagination and pure force than almost any of its contemporaries. Not only is Trey Azagthoth's guitar monstrously powerful, but the rhythm section of drummer Pete Sandoval and new bassist/vocalist Stephen Tucker manages to be simultaneously nimble and pummeling. Also, the group has written some of their strongest songs to date -- nothing here relies on pure riffage alone. The end result of the musical and writing vision is one hell of an album and possibly their best record to date.

In your panoramas...
The Golden Age of American Death Metal

An often rejected, parodied and misinterpreted sub-genre of metal, the fierce death metal has nevertheless succeeded in garnering a significant following over the decades. Arriving in the 80s, the genre continues to evolve; from its early pursuit of the ultra-violent to its more recent incorporation of aspects from more mainstream genres. Let us look back at the origins of death metal.

Frank Zappa, for Better or for Laughs

The more time that goes by since Frank Zappa’s passing on December 4, 1993, the more his absence is cruelly felt in the music world. It's not that we have forgotten him, but we have been searching in vain for someone to fill his boots. Frank Zappa’s genius, both cosmic and comical, has no equivalent today, this is because no one, in almost three decades, has been able to combine such a high level of musical talent with such a brilliant sense of humor. Something Zappa did so well.

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.
