Dark and glistening. Like a cave on the French Riviera. That’s where Jagger and Richards' band – living as tax exiles - recorded the immense Exile on Main Street, a musical feast with dishes served as country (Sweet Black Angel, Sweet Virginia), gospel (Shine a Light), blues (Shake Your Hips) and visceral rock'n'roll (the opening of Rocks Off and the cult track Happy with Keith Richards on vocals). The Rolling Stones may have been at the height of fame, but this masterpiece came from the heart and soul, with a dark and dirty sound and a sincere and raw style. American roots music (country, blues, folk) had rarely sounded so original. Jagger sings like an inspired old sage. Richards unleashes sharp, sublime guitar riffs. After all these years, we still can’t find the slightest flaw in this double album which many consider to be The Rolling Stones’ best... © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus

What a difference 50 years can make! By early 1969 rock music had become a leading cultural force: The Who had just recorded Tommy; Cream packed Royal Albert Hall for their farewell concert; Janis Joplin became a solo act; Led Zeppelin performed for the first time. And after four months of recording, The Beatles (aka The White Album) was out and climbing the charts. To understate the obvious, rock music was awash in talent and standards were high.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

The White Album: The Beatles' Immaculate Conception

Here we take a look back at a record whose history is as complex as its content. The Beatles' legendary "White Album", which was their only double album, is now more than 50 years old. Listen to the 2018 widely-expanded re-release containing an abundance of previously-unreleased material on Qobuz.
