But the Sardinian trumpeter has always remained a craftsman of a lyrical jazz, refined and elegant. Shockingly elegant even! For his 60th birthday, which he will celebrate on February 10, we take a look back at a very subjective selection of ten of his albums...
Along with Blue Note and Verve, Impulse! is without doubt one of the best-known American jazz labels. A house painted orange and black that not only produced John Coltrane, but also some of the most adventurous musicians of the 1960s.
Without him, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau and a few thousand other jazz pianists would play differently. Forty years after his death, the legacy of Bill Evans hasn’t lost any of its influence. On the contrary, it is difficult to sort through his bottomless discography without finding even an incidental recording that doesn’t tower above 90% of the competition.
