Right from the outset, the abrasive guitars and jackhammer rhythms of ‘Frenzy’, the first track on Iggy Pop’s 19th album, are an instant throwback to the good old Stooges. At 75 years old, how can that make any sense? Thankfully, the album is not the sonic monolith that ‘Frenzy’ suggests it might be. With its one-finger pianos and squeaky guitar riffs, ‘Modern Day Rip’ sounds like another, equally successful Stooges tribute. Other tracks calm things down though, providing some contrast and making things more exciting. There’s something for everyone: proto-punk Iggy, but also a new wave, synth-powered Iggy (‘Comments’), a crooning Sinatra-esque Iggy (‘New Atlantis’), a cheap, fake jazz interlude (‘The News for Andy’), a pedal-steel flavored, quasi-country track (‘Morning Show’)—but everywhere on the album are Iggy’s exciting melodies and songs that’ll make you tap your feet and move your head about in all directions.
On the ironic caricature that is ‘Neo Punk’, Iggy Pop takes a punt at all the fake, middle class punks out there. But he can afford to do this. After all, he and he alone embodies the fundamental and everlasting essence of authentic rock. He is its historical messiah, surrounded by heavy-lifting apostles in members and ex-members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink 182, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters and Jane’s Addiction, all of whom know the music inside-out, and most importantly, how to make it groove. The beautiful jukebox that is Every Loser is perhaps not as successful as Post Pop Depression, his relentless return to rock back in 2016 with Queens Of The Stone Age, but it’s still an effective and joyous celebration of the simple joys of rock ’n’ roll. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
