Recruited by Radiohead because of his likeness to Morrissey, guitarist Ed O’Brien is embarking on a career as a frontman almost thirty years after the Oxford band’s debut, and thirty years of humming backing vocals in the studio. His vocation to write music started to develop during his trip to Brazil where he had taken a break for several months with his family. At first, he was looking for someone else to sing but soon changed his mind after listening to recordings of his own voice.

The album is inspired by Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, which O’Brien admits was his main influence. He is joined by many familiar faces such as Radiohead’s bassist Colin Greenwood, Portishead’s guitarist Adrian Utley, Wilco’s drummer Glenn Kotche and, most importantly, by childhood friend and producer Flood, who just so happens to have worked for Depeche Mode, U2 and The Smashing Pumpkins and helped O’Brien to produce the album. Earth has a tendency to go from lighter acoustic parts to darker, more turbulent parts, like on Banksters, which starts off with a bossa nova feel before moving on to a chorus that sounds like a mix between The White Stripes, Led Zep and Latin music, or as O’Brien calls it, EOB. The same can be said for the samba riff and kick rock on Brasil and the acoustic bass overlaid by the electric guitar on Mass, which is one of the highlights of this debut album that has unveiled some great potential. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Nordic Jazz in 10 Albums

Snowy scenes, big expanses, beautiful nature everywhere… Scandinavia is often described by the same old clichés. Jazz is no exception. We tend to talk about Scandi jazz like it’s one big genre. However, each country has its own distinct style; Denmark’s scene rivals traditional North American jazz, Norway tends to get experimental and Sweden treads the line between the two. Nordic musicians have been adding their own unique touch to the genre since the 70s and the younger generation continue to sculpt its future. Here, we zoom in on Scandinavian jazz in 10 albums, offering a glimpse into a discography that’s as wide as a fjord.

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
