The members of the Quatuor Arod contribute notes to this recording of Schubert string quartets, and they give an idea of what to expect: the String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810 ("Death and the Maiden"), is termed a "full-blown tone poem that will keep [the audience] spellbound for three quarters of an hour." The quartet has the chops to carry off this concept, and they fill it out with sharp delineation of the personages in Schubert's song in the first movement. One might even call their interpretation operatic, so episodic and dramatic is the group's approach. The readings are intense throughout, not only in "Death and the Maiden" but in the single-movement Quartettsatz, D. 703, and in the inexplicably neglected String Quartet No. 4 in C major, D. 46. This strikingly ambitious work by the 16-year-old Schubert grasps the weight of Beethoven like nothing else around in 1813, and the Quatuor Arod justifies their high-powered reading as they careen around the work's sharp turns with tight control. Listen to the Menuetto, indubitably more of a scherzo, in the unusual key (for a C major quartet) of B flat major. Or rather, B flat major at the start; it passes through recondite harmonic territory on its way back home. The presentation is marred by over-resonant sound, picking up extraneous noise that would have been nicely absorbed in the small venues where Schubert imagined his chamber music, but this is on balance an important Schubert chamber release, even if it will be too tumultuous for some.

8 Great Women of Electronic

From the pioneers of musique concrete to the stars of 21st century clubbing, Qobuz is celebrating eight women who have left their own distinct marks on electronic music over the past fifty years.

Marc Ribot, the Anti-guitar Hero

For over thirty-five years, Marc Ribot’s name has been on the covers of albums by Tom Waits, Alain Bashung, Diana Krall, John Zorn, Robert Plant, Caetano Veloso and numerous other artists, and when he's not busy lending his unique guitar to others, the New Yorker takes pleasure, under his own name, in breaking down and re-building rock, jazz, funk, Cuban music and anything his fingers touch.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
