The place for Art of Noise neophytes to start, Daft collects (Who's Afraid Of?) The Art of Noise! and Into Battle with the Art of Noise, along with two reworkings of "Moments in Love" from the original U.K. release of that song, to make a fantastic hour's worth of music. If anything, a single or two aside, Daft beats out the official Best Of compilation by a mile. Having aged superbly with time, AON's early works sound all the more advanced and of the moment, a testament especially to Trevor Horn's excellent production and Anne Dudley's gripping arrangements. Further entertainment comes from the liner notes, which aren't merely state-of-the-art 1984 album design but an apparently barbed attack on the further incarnation of the band from one Otto Flake. The exact seriousness of this is up to the reader. As for the "Moments in Love" versions, both are gentler and more elegant than the already lush original, and none the worse for that, though "(Three Fingers Of) Love" does have rather disconcerting sound effects added to it.

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the 90s the trip hop wave flooded Great Britain with electro influenced by Jamaican music and rap beats. With dreamy rhythms and oppressive atmospheres, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and various others invented a futuristic kind of dark soul music which was sometimes very cinematographic. Time to zoom in on 10 albums from a genre with a fuzzy outline but a very clear influence.

Steve Reich, The Minimal Animal

He is one of the pioneers of minimalist music. But he is also one of the most-played contemporary composers. At 80, Steve Reich is a kind of untouchable guru who still exerts a powerful influence over musicians of many genres, even techno. His personal evolution; his relationship to jazz or world music; the transmission of his works down the generations: the straight-talking New Yorker tells all.

Laurent Garnier, the fight for techno

As he recently celebrated the 30th year of his career in October 2017 at the Rex Club in Paris, Qobuz seized this opportunity to dive into the musical journey of Laurent Garnier, a pioneer of the French electronic scene who spent three decades fighting for the recognition of a music genre that had been ostracized by the media and institutions. Let’s take a look at this uphill battle for techno.
