Cellist Kian Soltani is best known as a member of Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and for high-minded solo and chamber music projects with Barenboim and others. With Cello Unlimited, he shifts gears completely with an album of popular film music. The album has scored commercial success in the face of considerable competition in the field, and the reason is that it's a film music album of a thoroughly unusual kind. The arrangements are all by Soltani, and more than that, he performs all the parts, overdubbing his own playing. It's easy to come out with a mechanical sound in this kind of operation, but Soltani sweats the details and produces a kind of melancholy all-cello layer on top of great musical scenes from Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, and others. There are cello solos, but it's not solo-heavy music. Soltani is a charismatic figure who, one might think, would have created this as a star vehicle for himself, but it's not so, at least not in the usual way. He adds a couple of intermezzos of his own composition, and here, the solo cello steps into the spotlight. Sampling Shore's Lord of the Rings tracks will give listeners an idea of how they will react to the whole. The album is not for everybody, but it likely signals Soltani's emergence as an audience favorite.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.

Martha Argerich: The Untameable Pianist

For over 60 years the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich has amazed audiences all over the world with her wild, impulsive playing and her constant risk-taking, overcoming every technical difficulty by turning each of her performances into a fascinating journey.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
