The Franco-Italian tenor Roberto Alagna associates much of his childhood memory with the figure of Enrico Caruso, the first modern tenor. Alagna superimposes the memory of his great grandparents, who knew the illustrious tenor in New York at the beginning of the last century, with that of the Richard Thorpe film The Great Caruso starring Mario Lanza which he watched when he was a little boy.
These memories never left him and, with his teacher Rafael Ruiz, a young Roberto listened with passion to Caruso’s recordings while trying to pull apart the art of his singing. And now, fully matured, it makes sense that Alagna should finally dedicate an album to his idol, a project long in the waiting.
Respecting the style and vocal delivery of Caruso all while conserving his own vocal identity, Robert Alagna has released here a generous album that endeavours to re-establish the discography of his glorious fellow-singer from 1902 to 1920. All in all, the work consists of twenty tracks that interpret the songs recorded by Caruso: sometimes operatic and sometimes more popular in style, Alagna includes an interpretation of Lucio Dalla’s Caruso, a tune written in 1986 about the final days of the tenor in the Sorrente Vittoria Hotel, with an arrangement by Yvan Cassar that does not undermine the rest of the album. A true 2019 vintage if you will. © François Hudry/Qobuz

What a story! Angela. The woman, the career, the discs.

PALERMO, October 2017. – Charming, funny, mischievous, open, this is the impression that Angela Gheorghiu gave us when we at Qobuz met her recently for the release of her latest album. You have to be wary of reputations, and especially of the one that paints Gheorghiu only as a capricious shrew. More than that, she’s a woman who reflects upon the image she gives off… and who wants to do her best. She struggles against what Philippe Beaussant called “Malscène” (junk scene) in an essay published in 2005 —as we say junk food in the world of cuisine. In tune with the academician and musicologist deceased in 2016, Angela Gheorghiu fights a desperate battle against directors who, according to her, destroy the masterpieces of lyrical art by denaturing them instead of serving them.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

The rivals: Handel and Porpora in London

After the recent release of the wonderful opera Germanico in Germania by Nicola Porpora, counter-tenor Max-Emanuel Cencic is giving an album recital by way of homage to Nicola Porpora recorded with the Armonia Atenea ensemble under the direction of George Petrou. In this new and atmospheric piece, he evokes the ferocious rivalry which set Porpora against Handel in London...
