Founded in 1998 at Pro Corda, Suffolk, the multiaward-winning Doric String Quartet describes recording Britten’s quartets as a significant milestone: ‘In our recording we have endeavoured to tread a line that brings out the humanity in these works but also recognises the need for distance and fragility. This is very personal and intimate music, yet also world-encompassing and timeless.’ The Quartet continues: ‘Another feature of this recording is that Hélène Clément, our violist, is playing on Benjamin Britten’s own viola. This instrument (on loan from the Britten-Pears Foundation) was made in 1843 in Milan by Francesco Guissani. It was previously owned by the composer Frank Bridge who gave it to Britten, as a departure gift when Britten and Pears set sail for the USA in 1939.’ Hélène Clément writes: ‘To be able to explore the music of Britten with the very sound that the composer had in his ears is the greatest honour and joy I could have imagined.’ © Chandos

In your panoramas...
Gounod: the Romantic, the Mystic

A major artisan of the renaissance in French music in the second half of the 19th century, alongside his elder colleague Berlioz, whom he admired, and his followers Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Massenet, who were inspired by his faith in Art, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), a mystic and a charmer, a romantic in search of a new classicism, owed his fame to a few masterpieces, which have overshadowed his daring. A flourishing discography allows us to discover the diversity of his music: instrumental, vocal, religious, and lyrical.

The Sirens Cycle, the listening-sight of Peter Eötvös

Homer, Joyce and Kafka. These are the authors of the texts that are put into music by Peter Eötvös in the The Sirens Cycle (2016). The Sirens Cycle is a string quartet with coloratura soprano, in line with the concept—the addition of the voice—of Schönberg’s Second Quartet, Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite (in his sung variant or, at least, that can be sung) and Egon Wellesz’s Sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The album concludes with Eötvös’ first quartet, Korrespondenz, a work dating from 1992, a kind of “mini-opera” without singing, that uses the correspondence between Mozart and his father during the year 1778 as a support. Omer Corlaix reopens the debate on this work for us, after talking about it with the composer himself, specially for Qobuz! The Sirens Cycle is our October Qobuzism on the BMC label. Let yourself be transported by the music of one of the most endearing composers of our time.
