The Tunisian Anouar Brahem is one of the most subtle contemporary oud players. Evolving in the ECM sphere, his discographic adventures therefore unfold on international grounds where music coming from ancestral traditions crosses paths with the contemporary and jazz worlds. The virtuoso, who celebrates his sixtieth birthday with this album, wanted to indulge himself by renewing a dialogue opened two decades ago with the bass player Dave Holland. And the cherry on top: this jazz master came with a former colleague of his Miles Davis period, the drummer Jack DeJohnette. Brahem also wanted to confront his Arabic lute against a high-level pianist and Manfred Eicher, Mister ECM, introduced him to the talented British musician Django Bates. The four men obviously get along well, and it shows in every corner of these nine tracks. Jazz is at the center, but far from being conventional, bound to be blended by mixing the Eastern scholarly grammar and the famous maqams. But most of the time it’s music both pure and without a label much like the virtuosos without borders who play it. © BM/Qobuz

Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976 the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman, ran some kind of mad laboratory, in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

The Stan Getz Quartet Live at the Village Gate

The story of jazz is sometimes told as a tour of mountaintops, the peak-achievement albums that changed the thinking of everyone else on the scene.

Verve Records, the sound of America

Norman Granz hit the nail on the head when he defined his label as “the sound of America”. Admittedly, it was last century. And granted, it mainly just stuck to jazz. But even today, with a catalogue including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson and countless others, Verve represents one of the most important musical ventures of the twentieth century.
