Country & Western music has, for the most part, abandoned "Western." But on her third studio album, Neko Case embraces it wholeheartedly. This is high-lonesome, cowboy campfire, weird desert nights music. With Case on the saw, "Pretty Girls" is as haunting as any ghost story. In fact, the whole album is so atmospheric, it's like an audio book set to music. The lyrics "Fluorescent lights engage, blackbirds frying on a wire/ Same birds that followed me to school when I was young" set the spooky mood right away, on opener "Things That Scare Me." Recorded in Tucson, Arizona, the album is also a showcase for local talent: Joey Burns (a one-man utility tool on accordion, pump organ, bass and acoustic guitar) and John Convertino (drums) of the band Calexico lend their signature Tex-Mex flavor, as does Giant Sand's Howe Gelb on piano and Wurlitzer. It's a neat trick when all that is applied to a song like "Look for Me (I'll Be Around)," first made famous by Sarah Vaughan; in Case & Co's hands, it's as torchy as ever, but with a sinister David Lynchian twist. That vibe also comes through on the title track, which imparts the kind of nighttime bone chill you only get in the desert. The open-hearted "I Wish I Was the Moon" sways easily, like a Mazzy Star song, while "I Missed the Point" saunters like a happily loping mare. And when Case steps up to belt out "Runnin' Out of Fools"—best known as an Aretha Franklin song—it's hypnotizing. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
