Based in Utrecht, Holland, Guess Who? is a festival that focuses on discoveries, experimentation, side-stepping and crossing genres. Anoushka Shankar ticked at least three of these boxes and was invited to play at the event in 2018. Although not necessarily a discovery, Ravi Shankar’s daughter (a sitar virtuoso like her late father) presented a series of unexpected and daring concerts. On stage, she played the sitar accompanied by percussionist Manu Delago and 27 string players from the Metropole Orkest, a famous Dutch ensemble that plays everything but the clasical repertoire. The performance was led by the nimble-fingered sitarist, her fingertips dancing across the long, wide neck of her unusual instrument, a metaphorical runway that allowed her wildest musical dreams to take flight. Of course, this concert was far from a solo performance. On percussion (which includes the hang, a type of steel drum that’s been crossed with a flying saucer), Delgado echoes Shankar’s intuitive playing. Meanwhile, the Metropole Orkest does more than merely accompany her. Their taut strings intertwine intimately with the arabesque sound of the sitar, weaving a flying carpet out of perfectly-tuned notes. Between Us doesn’t reveal what seperates all these musicians, but what connects them.
