Der Revolutionär & seine Rivalen (The Revolutionary and His Rivals) is an addendum to the Casal Quartett's complete historical performance cycle of Beethoven's string quartets, timed to coincide with the Beethoven 250th anniversary year of 2020. In five volumes, it contains a large selection of works relating to the quartet's chosen theme. One may object that the final 60 percent of the program pertains largely to Beethoven's successors rather than to his rivals, to composers who benefited from Beethoven's revolutionary innovations; the fifth and final CD is devoted to Carl Czerny's String Quartet No. 28 in A flat major, written in 1851. This said, there is much here to interest Beethoven lovers. The Casal Quartett's playing, complete with severely over-resonant sound, will be familiar to those who've heard the cycle of Beethoven's quartets themselves; the group gets a lovely tone out of Classical-era strings. The biggest attraction for many will be that the quartet unearths some unusual works by Adalbert Gyrowetz, Peter Hänsel, and Gaetano Donizetti, who wrote numerous string quartets as a young man. His String Quartet No. 17 in D major is interesting not only for its deft interweaving of melody and structure but for various moves that show a deeper understanding of Beethoven than most other composers had in the mid-1820s: listen to the octave opening of the finale and its development. Quartets by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Schubert are included; none of these were Beethoven's "rivals," but all receive attractive performances. This collection will find places on many shelves and hard drives.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.

10 Versions of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique

As a proper manifesto of French romanticism, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique marked the 19th century as much as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring impacted the 20th. Composed in Paris − which at the time was a global crucible for artistic creation − these two masterpieces catapulted musical language into another dimension. On December 5th, 1830 the revolutionary work of 27-year-old Hector Berlioz deeply moved the musicians present in the small room of the old academy of music, among whom were Meyerbeer and Liszt, who were impressed by the extraordinary audacity of this piece presented just three years after Beethoven’s death.
