In this early album, the second she recorded for EMI, Sabine Meyer pays homage to the figure of Heinrich Baermann, the most talented clarinetist of his generation in the early 19th-century. The greatest composers dedicated him works for clarinet, such as Weber’s famous quintet, here performed in a version with string orchestra. Mendelssohn himself, a close friend of Baermann, composed two pieces for clarinet, basset horn and orchestra for him and his son. They are here performed by Sabine Meyer and her brother Wolfgang. The last piece of the album is a lovely Adagio for clarinet and strings, long thought to be Wagner’s, but actually composed by Baermann himself. © Warner Classics

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Nelson Freire, a Humble Virtuoso

A child prodigy in his native country, the Brazilian pianist who passed away in November 2021 kept his distance from the noisy fanfare of fame. His enormous hands and his natural and virtuoso technique always assisted his full, powerful and mellow sound. Here Qobuz looks back at the career of a musician that for a long time was the “best-kept secret in the world of the piano”.

Martha Argerich: The Untameable Pianist

For over 60 years the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich has amazed audiences all over the world with her wild, impulsive playing and her constant risk-taking, overcoming every technical difficulty by turning each of her performances into a fascinating journey.
