In your panoramas...
Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.

Maria Callas "dal vivo"

Breathtaking in its range, Maria Callas’s recorded legacy becomes all the more astonishing when we consider that her studio opera recordings were all made within the space of just over a decade: she recorded no fewer than 24 complete works between 1952 and 1960 (and most of them between 1953 and 1957). Soon after moving to Paris, she added Carmen and a second Tosca to the list, in 1964 and 1965 respectively. Her complete studio recordings, including a series of celebrated recital discs, all painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, were released in a luxury box set by Warner Classics in 2014. This is our reproduction, with the kind permission of Warner Music, of Michel Roubinet’s introductory text in the album booklet ‘Maria Callas Live’.

Fritz Busch at Glyndebourne

We cannot talk about the history of the Glyndebourne operas without mentioning Fritz Busch. The German-born conductor dedicated his life to music from an early age before fleeing to the green pastures of England when Hitler came into power. Almost by coincidence, Busch was there to conduct the orchestra as the curtains rose for the first ever Glyndebourne Festival in 1934. Today, he is considered one of the most outstanding conductors of the 20th century.
