In the family of funk Prince Rogers Nelson was a genre all by himself. In 40 years of career, he managed to mix the legacy of the founding fathers (James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton) with influences like rock 'n' roll, electro and even jazz. An exuberant and stunning groove that shone mainly between 1978 and 1988...
In the midst of the 90s when hip-hop was going through its golden age, a revolution within soul music was also underway. With Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many others, the genre found again its class: an echo of the simplicity and refinement that brought to life the albums of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Roberta Flack. After years in the shadow of the reigning ultra-commercial and soft R&B, the noticeably more underground Neo Soul, or Nu Soul, relit the flame of soul music and returned it to its roots in terms of both composition and lyricism. A brief but highly influential movement.
There’s more to Chic than just “Le Freak”! In the midst of disco madness, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards embraced the genre wholeheartedly. Preferring to hide in the shadows rather than bask in the limelight, the duo produced a flurry of influential funky hits. Nile Rodgers, the sole survivor of the duo, is now resurrecting Chic after helping Daft Punk on “Get Lucky”.
