For the money, you are not going to find a more definitive Greatest Hits by Merle Haggard. There are 20 cuts on this baby and all of 'em were bona fide hit singles that basically defined the man's well-earned reputation as a great poet of the working class -- not to mention as a country songwriter. Haggard's Epic period may not be here, nor anything from his MCA albums, but it hardly matters because this is one jam-packed set from top to bottom.

In your panoramas...
Merle Haggard, the bad boy of country music

Alcohol, prison, drugs and poverty. Merle Haggard, who experienced all four, spent his life singing about America’s outcasts and dropouts. Creator of the Bakersfield sound, he stripped country music down to make its message even more striking.

The Resilience and Rebellion of Lucinda Williams

If you're looking for Lucinda Williams' worldview in her music, it can be found somewhere between "Drunken Angel," and "Get Right With God." Coupled with genuine empathy for the foibles of humanity—and respect for the allure, urgency and wreck 'n' ruin of relationships—Williams has always had a healthy awe for the powers of good and evil, a looming sense of the vigilant almighty. From the album's title to the worried cover photo, a sense of misgiving hangs over the songs on her compelling new album, Good Souls Better Angels.

Johnny Cash Behind Bars

Two legendary live albums released at the end of the sixties gave Johnny Cash’s career a huge boost and turned him into an international star. They were two records were unlike any others: they were recorded in prison. But how did the Man in Black find himself in such an unusual concert hall?
